This leads to Sozin’s attack on Roku in the palace when Roku confronts him about the colonies, and ultimately to Sozin abandoning Roku to the volcano. Roku, however, rejects this dream - and in doing so rejects Sozin. In Roku’s absence, Sozin creates an elaborate dream where they are reunited again - where they combine their considerable powers and change the world. Furthermore, he’s an important person with a destiny - one that doesn’t include Sozin. Suddenly Roku is the Avatar - the most important person in the world, even more important than the Fire Lord. Then Roku becomes the Avatar, and everything changes. Roku crushes on girls, but Sozin laughs it off - Roku will never get the guts to ask Tai Min out, after all. He’s deeply insecure about his feelings for Roku, because its the one thing that gives Roku power over him, but he tries not to let it bother him and just enjoys Roku’s company. As the Crown Prince, Sozin’s never had to want for anything, and he’s always been the ‘main character’ in the dynamic. Sozin has a crush on his best friend Roku. Sozin’s queer journey can be summarized as follows. There’s loads of support for both of these readings, but my point here isn’t to prove or disprove them, its to compare them, so I’ll leave that for other posts. (2) Azula had an unrequited crush on Ty Lee. (1) Sozin had a deep unrequited love for his best friend Sozin. So this analysis depends on two queer head-canons that are fairly popular but have NOT been confirmed (don’t me - the author is dead and intent doesn’t prohibit analysis, yada yada yada). There’s a lot of cool parallels here, but right now that’s all background to what I want to talk about. Like her great-grandfather, Azula is a strategic genius with a strong narcissim streak who has difficulty feeling empathy for others. Azula is a foil to Zuko, just as Ozai is to Aang, and Sozin is to Roku. Both Zuko and Azula and the great-grandchildren of the Avatar and the Firelord, and their final Agni Kai in “Into the Inferno”, in duet with Aang’s battle with Firelord Ozai, represents the resolution of Roku and Sozin’s story. There’s a lot of textual comparisons between Roku and Zuko (even their names are similar), but I haven’t seen as much about Sozin and Azula.
